Whatever the Wind Brings

Wildfires in Portugal

It seems most of the fires, at least in this region, started on Sunday, but by Monday things were already out of control. I was able to take two pictures during the day and, man, things were wild. I’ve seen the Sahara dust cover the country once or twice, but I’ve never seen the sun this way.

Photo of the sky covered by smoke. It's 3PM, but the smoke is so thick that it's possible to stare at the Sun.

This looks like the set of some apocalyptic movie or something. It’s crazy to think it was only 3 PM and, despite being around 30ºC, the sun wasn’t giving any heat.

Later that day I had to go to another place and things had not only changed for the worse, but there was some weird atmospheric shenanigans going on too.

A hazy sky with the Sun at the center, between two trees. The Sun is weak enough to be stared at, glowing like a red orb.

I swear this was not edited, the sky was full of smoke, but grey this time — looking a bit like cloudy weather, to be honest — but the sun turning into a red orb you could stare into was not what I expected.

What a crazy week.
